Stalwart Shed Resigns from Committee

Life Member and one of the original Shed members, Geoff Dunn has decided to resign from the Management Committee of The Entrance Men's Shed for personal reasons. Geoff is one of the founding members and played a big part in getting the Shed up and running and his contribution to the committee will be greatly missed. He continues as an ordinary member and we look forward to his ongoing help and guidance in the many aspects of shed work.

His place on the committee has been taken by Roy Webb, known to many as Santa Claus.

Shed to Open an Extra Day.

As from Wednesday 1st February, 2012 the shed will open for a trial period on Wednesdays. This This will be in addition to our usual opening times of Mondays and Fridays. Hours will be the same i.e. from 9:00am to 3:00 pm.

If attendance during the trial period warrants it Wednesday openings will become a permanent feature of the shed.

Christmas Holiday

The Shed will close on Friday 23rd December, 2011 and re-open on Monday 16th January, 2012.

NEW LIFE MEMBER APPOINTED

The members of the shed unanimously accepted a motion to confer a life membership on Peter Whitehead. This is in recognition of his efforts in bringing the training room extension to fruition. He has done this almost single handedly while carrying out his regular duties as the shed's Treasurer. He joins Allan Kember and Geoff Dunn the other members of this group.

SHED EXTENSION GETS UNDERWAY

The Shed extension is now underway. Shed members laid the slab for the new training room on Wednesday and the builder starts construction next Monday. The job brought out skills in members that had previously been hidden. Philip set up the formwork and did most of the concreting with help from Andrew, Peter and Roger. Bob and Terry barrowed the mix from the truck to the site.

VALE ERNIE BROOKER

Shed members were saddened to hear of the death of Shed stalwartand oldest member, Ernie Brooker, last Wednesday. Ernie had been in Gosford Hospital for some time. He was the Shed expert in scraping, sanding and painting of items salvaged by other members.

He had his 90th birthday last year and until this latest bout of illness he looked after himself and in spite of requests from his family not to drive he drove himself to the Shed each day.

Funeral details have not been finalised at time of going to press.

Wyong Shire Council has recently approved the development application for the addition of a training room for members of The Entrance Men's Shed. This is the culmination of a lot of effort by Shed members and particularly, Peter Whitehead, who have put in a lot time and work into gaining this result. With all systems 'go' members are looking forward to the new building and the benefits it will bring.

As a result of recent changes to the regulations covering the storage of weapons in museums The Entrance / Long Jetty RSL Sub-branch approached us to assist with the display at their museum.

Bob and Terry spent some time designing and installing the new rack at the museum on The Entrance Road Long Jetty.

Geoff returned to the shed today and presented us with two purchases from a Men's Shed out west. The duck toy caused a few comments but it was the innocent looking money box that caused the most disruption.

Well there was a Presidential Surprise for Ian that had the shed in stitches.... pity there is no video of that one.

A much loved piece of craftwork this is for his son. There is enough space on the rear tray to land a helicopter or a small plane. Some of the earlier projects that he has completed.

The Shed was well represented at the meeting with Peter, Kim and Ian. Representatives from all the Central Coast men sheds were present for election of a new committee and an exchange of news and idea about Mens Sheds.

Terry took on the job of making up the new batch of money box houses for the Central Coast Kids-in-Need project. The boxes are placed in shops and post offices for kindly customers to donate spare change to the Kids-in-Need charity.

Kids-in-Need raise funds for children and families faced with childhood cancers that face the difficulties of travel from the Central Coast to John Hunter or Royal North Shore Hospitals for treatment.

This is our second order for these money houses Terry has included the popular chimney stack and added door handles to this model.

Bunnings BBQ

The crew from The Entrance Men's Shed were out early this morning setting up for the fundraiser BBQ at Bunnings.
All prepared to make 400 sausage sandwiches Rob was first in to lead the team. Rob has been working for some time to ensure that we had ice and eskies, meat and bread, butter and sauce and all the many other items suggested in the comprehensive instructions from Bunnings.

Many thanks to Rob for his effort leading this project.

Peter did an excellent job ensuring that our finances were in place in preparation for the day, money was handled effectively on the day and an accurate tally was ready at the end of the the day celebrate the fundraising efforts of the team.
Many thanks to all those that cooked and cleaned, handed out drinks, kept the meat cold and the cooked food hot. We had many reports after the day about the professional way the team served customers and the quality of the sausage sandwiches provided.

Elise from Bunnings was on hand early in the morning and late in the afternoon. Her support was important to making the day a success.
Many thanks to Bunnings Tuggerah for this opportunity. The comprehensive instructions, reassurance in the planning and professional support on the day were invaluable to The Entrance Men's Shed for this important fundraising activity.
Even Teddy was there on the day to supervise the operation.

A generous new donation of tools today included a car load of bench top carpentry equipment.

The Shed are very happy to receive generous donations of equipment from local residents. Many reasons prompt community members to donate to the shed. Most involve considerable commitment from those donating and their special requirments are accommodated where possible. Some equipment will be usd in the local shed. Some will be passed to other sheds in need of new equipment as they set up operation.

Other tools duplicated or in excess of the requirements of the shed can be sold to raise much needed funds for the ongoing operation of the shed.

A craft table also moved into the forecourt of The Entrance Men's Shed. This has proved to be a very versatile addition to the sheds working benchtop area.

While the cars were unloaded Roger and Peter set about cooking up the monthly BBQ for the hungry moving team..... where is Lester ?

James Constructions

James has two constructions going on at the same time.

The bird shelter, mounted on a post and firmly clamped to the bench, is being painted by Brian.

At the same time, Jim continued on with the 100th scale model of The Entrance Men's Shed.

He ws carefully adding in the front awning today with glue and clamps.

This excellent display cabinet is the most recent found object to come to the shed. It needs a bit of tender care but will be an excellent addition to the range of projects undertaken at the shed.

Theres a bit of leadlight repair required for one broken panel. The cabinet was in the shed less than a morning and already stripped back for a renovation!!!

Annual General Meeting 2010

The Entrance Men's Shed Inc held the Annual General Meeting at the The Shed 12.30 on 27 August 2010. A new committee was elected (see separate post).

Peter presents the treasurers report.
The meeting was well attended by members and all positions filled. The treasurers report, included audited accounts and finalisation of Form A12 for the Department of Fair Trading. Andrew was thanked for his support preparing the the accounts with Peter.

Bob Ihlein was thanked by the members for his contribution during the last year. During this period he has helped forge a strong team keen to see the shed have a succesful place supporting men's health and central place in the community of The Entrance.

The AGM was followed by a celebration .. around the BBQ.

Congratulations to all members on a successful year and the individual contributions that make The Entrance Men's Shed an important part of the local community.

Flushed with the success of the "aubergine all- terraine shopping trolley" Andrew was today restoring the pedals on another wheeled vehicle.

After some threading and adjustments to the pedals he was ready to try it out ... but only within the confines of the Centre. ...and carefully monitored by the other pedal power shedder Peter.

Chris C spent a few days sanding back this solid old table.

Chris was planning to stain it up at home away from the ever present dust in The Shed.... when its all ready its for a flat the he is currently furnishing.

The hard work has brought out the beautiful natural grains in the timber so that this will be a welcome addition to any residence.

Michaels masterpiece

Michael has been working on this coffee table for some time.

He has made laminated legs with decorative circular holes. He has installed a sliding tray beneath the lower shelf and will install a glass top when the carpentry components are all complete.

Micheal would have been much further along if one leg hadn't met the floor with a crash.

Its a solid and beautiful piece of carpentry an asset to any living room.

Boomerang designs

George came to the The Entrance Men's Shed in his professional capacity in support of men facing difficulties in family relationships.

George was excited on seeing the output of the Boomerang Project for the Wyoming Public School. He offered to take some boomerangs and paint some traditional designs as examples for the event in NAIDOC week.

Seen here are the designs that George has provided for this educational opporunity raising awareness of traditional culture in the local community.

Fancy Phone accessory

Greg has done a few projects at the shed and this is a small angled shelf to hold the mobile phone.

Not only does this hold the phone in place and provide a nominal position to locate it when required, this shelf also angles the face of any phone so that the keys and display can be seen easily when in use. The shelf is also large enough to accomodate a notepad, every convenience.

Peter was on a Wyong Shire Orientation bus tour today and was able to help the group by giving them access to The Shed.

Peter showed them the facility, the equipment and projects that the team have undertaken in The Shed.

The group was impressed with the facilities and Peter may have inspired a new member or two.

Terry has a sharp eye for a choice piece of timber and saw some very fine pieces turned up in the scrap from Wideline Windows.

Well he didn't waste a moment and designed these little drawer boxes and proceed to make these three.

Terry was even sharing his secret for getting such a womderful finish to the boxes. Sharing skills, knowledge and information is an integral part of the shed culture.

Tubby spent some time after the toolbox meeting this morning discussing the operation of the thicknesser.

Men's Sheds have members with a variety of skills from those who have worked extensively in workshops in the industry, those that have some experience and complete novices. Sharing information is one of the great strengths of the peer education that occurs in Mens Sheds.

Learning while doing is a strong ethos at The Entrance Men's Shed.

Andrew was hard at work today finishing off the fence extenstions for the Bateau Bay Community Nursery.

The extensions will fit over the existing fence posts raising the height of the fence. Wire will be strung through the extensions and this will vines to grow higher.

tissue boxes

Dads Day Out, Wyong will be held at Colongara Bay Park on 20 June 2010. the event will commence at 11am.

The organising committee are keen to have interactive events for dads and kids. There was a donation of hammers from Bunnings for the event so the Mens Sheds have set about finding an activity that uses the hammers and has men and their children to interact.

Tissue boxes prepared in a flat pack for assembly at the event have been made. All 100 of them.

The Entrance Men's Shed took on the task of making 100 tissue boxes for this event. All the sides were cut out today to match the tops that were cut and routed last shed day.

Funds were sourced and made available through The Benevolent Society for the materials.

The Cafe at The Entrance Community Centre opened today, serving its first cup of coffee to customers.

The Cafe is a community venture with student providing the labour under supervision to operate the facility. They are doing hospitality training with Breakthru: People Solutions.

The cafe will be open from Monday to Thursday. . .starting immediately after ANZAC Day. There will be cafe beverages, some cakes and some light meals for lunch.

Lester has whipped this one up for us with his signwriting skills and some spare time at home.

It has immediately been put to good use around the shed and environs to guide people in and to the safer parts of the shed.

The Entrance Men's Shed made a strong contribution to the G.O.A.T.festival at the Koala Park Lake Munmorah Power Station.

Shedders will recognise a few items from The Entrance Shed on display on the day.

Thanks again to Bob Ihlein for towing the trailer up in the early morning.

Many visitors came to the Mobile Men's Shed on the day to talk about sheds, enquiring about opening times and what happens at a shed. With over 60 enquiries on the day it was a most successful outing for the Mobile Shed.

Enquiries mainly focussed on the San Remo Community Men's Shed but with festival goers coming from all over the central coast there were enquires about Gosford, The Entrance and as far away as the Peninsula shed.

Wideline waste reduction

Wyong Shire Council are keen to reduce the waste and increase recycling in Wyong Shire. The Environmental Edcuation group found that Wideline Windows were keen to reduce the cost of recycling and make a contribuion to the community.

They invited the Men's Sheds of Wyong Shire to view the material available and the arrangments for pickup at their site.

There are wide variety of materials that sheds will find as it becomes available.

The toolbox meeting this morning discussed the upcoming public holidays and events for April.

Rather than lose so many Monday and Friday opening days due to Easter and Anzac Day, the shed will be opend for three Wednesdays in April. On the Wednesday before and after Easter, the shed will be open, as well the Wednsday after Anzac Day.

Chris and Peter were keen to try out the new Biscuit Jointer. Under the guise of helping new member Frank finish up his picture frame they had the opportunity to test out the new machine.

After a little adjustment the settings were fine and the dust bag helped to keep the shavings from their hair.

The Disability loo is sporting some new furniture. The loo paper holder was assembled from the pieces donated when the Long Jetty Hospital closed its workshop. Well done guys assembling this attractive item and staining it to a professional finish.

There always a need for storage at The Entrance Men's Shed and this shelf has added some much needed space to assemble the cleaning products in the one area.

Some of our stackable chairs have found their way into the shower area. Not much used for showers and a convenient place thats not in the workshop area.

Men’s Shed Boost

The Labor Member for Lyons, Michael Polley today announced that Labor would commit $130,000 ($5,000 each) for 26 Men’s Sheds across Tasmania.

Mr Polley announced the Labor commitment at Pete’s Community Workshed in Bridgewater, which has been in operation for 10 years.

“Pete’s Community Workshed is an excellent example of the wonderful services that these community Men’s Shed provide all over Tasmania,” Mr Polley said.

“This is about getting our priorities right and not spending billions of dollars on a Midland Highway before our health and community services are looked after.

“Usually located in socio economically disadvantaged and rural areas, Men’s Sheds provide valuable health and well-being advice to mainly men but not exclusively so.

“Men’s Sheds provide largely informal programs and opportunities to develop intergenerational relationships.

“The Shed’s common commitment is to the health and well being of men experiencing some degree of social exclusion.

“They also offer informal opportunities for mentoring and enhancing men’s health and well being by improving access to information.

“Pete’s Community Workshed is an outstanding community resource which has increased the trust respect and mutual cooperation of the community it has been supporting for these 10 years.

“The Shed’s provide opportunities for the unemployed to learn or enhance practical life skills, bettering their chances of employment and improving their self esteem.

“It is only under a Labor Government that all Tasmanian’s will be looked after and supported.

Ballarat Mens Shed

Terry took leave of the shed to travel south and stumbled upon the Ballarat East Community Shed.

His full and enthusiastic report covered the generous hospitality of the Victorian Shedders, his awe at the space the shed encompasses and the variety and scale of the projects being undertaken. Building of racing cars and large scale models among some of the wonders from Ballarat.

The new blinds on the front windows have spruced up the font of the shed. Now we can keep out that morning sun streaming in during summer and maybe keep a little warmth inside during the colder winter days.

It has the added benefit of keeping eyes off tools and equipment from casual passers-by, adding a little to security of the shed.

Now if I can just remember to close them when leaving the shed!!

Samaritans BBQ

The Samaritans group that joins us most Friday afternoons offered to put on a BBQ as a thank you to the guys at the shed who assist them with their projects.

Broderick here is cleaning up after the event and we even had visitors from as far away as Tamworth and San Remo. Good see you joining in the festivities Richard and Doug.

Each of the men from Samaritans group are working on individual projects during their time at The Entrance Men's Shed.

They had chosen a project each, designed the item and purchased materials required at Bunnings.

There is plenty going on on Friday afternoons as they progress these projects, most of which are now nearing completion. With the assistance of the Shedders, these projects have been a learning experience for all involved.

The projects include -

Perfect Pete..

Pete has been working with Peter to make this box. Not only will it store Petes pencils and pens but it has divider inside to keep them separate.

The slotted slide top was a challenge at the time without the router operational but Peter met the challenge.

In case you cant read the writing that Pete has put on the top, it says - Perfect Pete..

Sofa gone

The well loved sofa was relegated to the rear of the shed during the Official Opening. Poor thing had been round there in the weather ever since.

When brought to the attention of Chris and Alby they decided it was time for a little deconstruction. So with heavy hammers and the chance to let out a bit of agression the sofa was demolished in short order and disposed of with due care.

There is a steady stream of orders coming in now for project that support the local community around The Entrance.

The board rack is now filled with material and functioning brilliantly, both the have the materials off the floor of the shed and providing ready access to materials.

Well done all those working on the project especially to Andrew and Ian.

Consequently there a few other projects proceeding along the rear wall of the shed as well.

Chris has been hard at work setting out the tools in intricate ordered and symmetricaly ascetic patterns.

At the same time a brand new set of shelves is taking shape behind the lathe area. Woodturner's Haven I think the sign said.

Door Wedges

Andrew needed door wedges to keep the doors of The Entrance Community Centre from slamming shut in the wind. Bob whipped up a dozen wedges for the errant doors to be used in the interim.

When the shed is a little more sorted out we will produce something a little more deocrative.

Tribute from Chris

Chris's mate Tony James Watterson left a slice of burl at his place for storage. Before he could collect this he passed away.

Chris decided to do a tribute to his mate and brought the slice of burl to the shed and sanded it back treated it and made it ready for display. He has placed a small plaque on the prepared burl and presented it at the funeral last week.

A fitting tribute to a friend, this will now be incorporated into a memorial to Tony at the property where he lived and was much loved.

Boat steps

One shed member has done some restorative work on the steps for a boat.

These three treads were carefully put through the router and the table saw to create the desired shapes.

That is to match the brackets that will hold each step end and the treads to prevent intrepid sailors from tropping.

These have now all been fitted to the vessel.

Sharp drills

Darrol hadn't been in the shed for more than a day when he discovered that many of the donated drills were ... well let's say.... less than sharp. Darrol volunteered to sharpen them and found a niche in shed life straight away.

With many donated drills it might take a while to see them all sharpened.

The Entrance Men's Shed certainly looks different from that angle.

Daves folding table

Dave came up with a innovative design for a small folding table for the caravan. There have been a few design changes along the way to improve the functionality of this project.

Dave finished it today and you can see him here with the table as it would be deployed. Shortly after this he fitted the table to the caravan is now keen to travel about to test it in the field.

Alan's Home Services came by an air-hose reel that was surplus to requirments. Alan decided that the best place for a valuable item of equipment is at The Entrance Men's Shed.

Having donated it over Christmas it was today installed by Rob E and now ready for use in the shed.

resourceful board

Chris was so impressed with the chopping boards being put together in the shed. He decided to take some wood that he "sourced" from the side of the road and begin a project.

After getting the edges trimmed and the surfaces regular, he glued the lot and clamped them together. Hes then sanded the whole surface, routed a fancy edge and finished the chopping board.

Chirs has now taken the advice of the chaps in the shed and oiled the board to make it an artistic addition to his kitchen.

Terry working on finishing the first batch of 50 Boomerangs. Thats 50 of 500 so there plenty more to make.

A local school has ordered these for NAIDOC week so that students can paint indigenous themes and win a prize in the class, form or school .

beau lathe

Beau Graham, no longer able to use his much loved wood lathe has donated it to The Entrance Men's Shed.

Not only did the late come in good condtion, it came with tools and turning blanks that were much needed additions to the shed armoury.

Beau will always be welcome at The Shed for a cuppa and a chat !!

Pluims boards

Pluims Interiors donated a "stack" of board via Dave Bett's "Lets Nail Depression" fundraising initiative. Dave arranged for his son Peter to deliver some of this physically large donation, using the "Open Shutters" truck.

Dead on time, the truck turned up to the loading dock at Bateau Bay Men's Shed and the shedders commenced unloading.

Some of this board was also collected by The Entrance Men's Shed team, who had hired a car trailer for the morning to accommodate the larger 3 meter sheets.

The Entrance team also took the opportunity to travel out to Pluims and collect additional material and deliver it back to the shed. Just as well we had six strong chaps to move the larger sheets.
